Francis Xavier Grollig was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 9, 1922. He joined the Society of Jesus in Milford, Ohio, after graduating from hisgh school in 1940. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Classical Studies at Loyola University in 1947 and a Master's degree in History in 1952. In 1959 Grollig received a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Indiana University.
